DIY Lampshade makeover
There is nothing better than to adorn your home with things you make yourself. For this months Monthly Makers challenge the theme was Interior so I decided it was time for my boring lampshade to get a make over.
While doing research I found thousands of ways of how to go about this. You can simply decoupage fabric or paper onto the lampshade, pull an old jumper over it, or tear the thing apart and do it ”the proper way”.
I have too much craft supplies in my stash, and I really want to make use of what I have and spend as little money as possible on buying new. You can buy special adhesive paper called ”astralit” in Swedish but I found it a little too costly for my taste, seeing that I wasn’t sure that I would manage to get a good end result.
To make sure the lampshade wouldn’t come out wobbly and lumpy with glue and fabric creases, I decided to try out a technique using the actual lampshade backing and then re-covering it with new fabric.
This was my first time attempting a lampshade makeover, so I decided to see this project as a ”trial and error” to figure out the technique, plus I didn’t really bother if the lampshade would end up in the dumpster.
How hard can it be?
-Fabric or other material
-Universal glue “karlssons”
-Optional mat knife
Step 1. Disassemble the lampshade. Carefully peel and tear of the old backing from the bottom and top ring. The backing was quite fragile and brittle so be careful not to rip it.
Step 2. Use the old backing as a template and place it on the fabric (or other material) Add 1 cm allowance all the way around and cut out the fabric you want to use.
Step 3-4. Spray glue the cut out piece of fabric and attach it to the backing, to make it nice and flat.
Start with the vertical side which will be on the reverse / inside of the lampshade once you assemble the lampshade. The most outer side, will be attached last. Attach glue where the fabric allowance goes.and close it around the backing.
Step 5 Glue down the bottom part, use clothes pegs to secure it.
Step 6. Start with the bottom ring ring Now to the fiddly part! Add glue bit by bit and fold it round the ring. Press down the fabric using your fingers and secure with clothes pegs.
Step 7. Carefully go around the ring repeating step 5-6.
Step 8 Use a loooot of pegs to secure the fabric to the backing.
Step 9 Add a glue all the way around the top and smear it out with your finger.
Step 10 fold down the fabric and use more pegs.
To secure the fold at the front, fold in the fabric so it looks neat, and glue! Optional – trim the fabric on the inside of the shade to make it look neat.
Et Voilá, the final result!
How hard was it? Well, since the backing was so brittle, it was a bit tricky not to make it crack even more. Since I all ready had the material at hand, it was a no-brainer. Now I just want to explore the world of lamp shade make over even more. Have you pimped your lampshades? I want to hear all about it!
Love and light (ha ha sorry the pun)
